CORFO’s Sustainability and Climate Change Agency (ASCC) and Fundación Chile joined forces to promote a new Clean Production Agreement (APL) that seeks to contribute to the country’s water security by promoting the efficient and sustainable use of water resources in the production of goods and services.
This initiative is part of the “Suizagua: Water unites us” program that the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC is implementing in countries such as Peru and Chile to provide a solution to water-related problems.
Based on the Peruvian experience, the APL will apply the “Water Footprint” tool (ISO 14,046), which will measure water-related environmental uses and impacts throughout the entire cycle of raw material extraction, processing, use and final disposal of products, and which depend on both the location and the time at which these uses occur.
At least 30 companies are expected to participate in the first stage of the initiative where they will be able to obtain the “Blue Certificate”, which promotes the sustainable management of water resources in Chile in the production of goods and services.
The first to opt for the seal will be those belonging to Chilealimentos (18 companies), which a few months ago were the protagonists of the fourth APL of the Processed Food Industry, which includes water management.
According to the official website of Fundación Chile, the Executive Director of the ASCC, Giovanni Calderón, pointed out that this APL “represents an enormous opportunity for companies of different sizes and productive sectors to take a significant step towards a sustainable and responsible management of water resources, an aspect of the highest relevance if we consider that an important part of the national territory is going through one of the worst droughts in its history”.
In conclusion, today more than ever it will be necessary to manage correctly and in real time the information on water resources availability, water efficiency practices and impact reduction measures in productive sectors.
For this purpose, at SIGEA Software we have developed HIDROMetrixThis solution is designed to automate the management of water resources for their sustainable use, integrating the available information to provide a global vision, in addition to enabling a detailed review of the behavior of each variable, parameter and indicator at the different monitoring points.
